Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan Bruckenthal was the first Coast Guard member killed in action since the Vietnam War when he was fatally wounded during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004. The Coast Guard commissioned its newest Fast Response Cutter after the 1997 Herndon High School graduate.
