Beth Meyer, one of the owners of 'The Lizard' shared why she, a business owner in the Town of Herndon, is helping to organize the event. Meyer said that she would not be alive today without the generosity of people who donated blood so many years ago. When Beth's mother was six months pregnant with her, a school bus jumped the curb and struck her mother. Four pints of blood saved her mother's life and that of her unborn child, Meyer. Meyer reports that one pint of blood can save up to three lives. "Give blood, you never who you might save."
Meyer is partnering with Prayers for Kate, an organization of the Herndon-based katescause.com formed to honor the memory of Kate Rhoades, who was diagnosed with cancer at 26 months old. Young Kate Rhoades finished her intense treatment protocol 25 months later, only to relapse a couple of months later and die from sepsis and organ failure.
The website, katescause.com reports that Kate’s cancer had a reputation for being the “good cancer”…the most treatable and with the best prognosis. After she died, "we (her family) promised that her death would not be in vain. We launched Kate’s Cause in her honor and memory to raise awareness, raise funds for better and less toxic treatments for kids and give back to the pediatric cancer community."
The Red Cross recommends that donors eat iron-rich foods and drink plenty of water before donating blood. If you have eligibility questions, call 1-866-236-3276. A photo ID is required.
